Relatives make their voices heard

Article Abstract:

Relatives who care for an elderly person who subsequently lives in a nursing home need to continue to play a part. The Relatives Association has been set up to give relatives the opportunity to make their views and problems known. It provides information on changing policy and advice networks. It aims to improve communication between relatives, care home staff and social workers. The Royal College of Nursing report 'A scandal waiting to happen?' describes private geriatric homes with poor quality nursing.

Mummy doesn't live here any more

Article Abstract:

There are around 200,000 women in the UK who do not live with their children. Some choose to leave their children in order to live with another partner, while others are unable to cope with being a parent. The time immediately after a mother leaves her children can be extremely stressful, as the children often find it very hard to understand why their mother has left. In some cases, the children conceal their feelings, and this can cause problems in later life.

When granny moves into the dining-room

Article Abstract:

Coping with a young family while also caring for an elderly parent can be extremely demanding. Adjusting to the changes in family life is often very hard at first, but the situation can improve with time. Some carers will willingly endure difficulties for the sake of an elderly parent, while others find that having a parent in their own home can seriously damage a previously positive relationship.
