'Remember me, but let me go - that's it.' (execution of child killer John Taylor)

Article Abstract:

Convicted child killer John Albert Taylor, who was recently executed by firing squad in the state of Utah, was determined that he should be killed. He did not take up the opportunity to make an appeal against the death penalty, and chose to die by firing squad, rather than by lethal injection. He had a number of serious health problems, and this was behind his decision to be executed, rather than to die alone in his cell. He never confessed to the crime, but there was little sympathy for him among the general public in the state.

NY declares war on Times Square sleaze

Article Abstract:

New York's Times Square and the surrounding areas have traditionally been associated with the sex industry, being home to many 'adult' businesses. However, city authorities are now trying to give the area a new image, passing strict new zoning laws and making efforts to attract entertainment which is more suitable for families. However, there is opposition to these moves from people who claim that they represent censorship, and therefore violate the rights of free expression contained in the country's constitution.

Ashdown may get UN role in Kosovo

Article Abstract:

UK Liberal Democrats leader Paddy Ashdown may take up the position of United Nations representative in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. In this role, he would be responsible for ensuring that ethnic Albanian refugees can return to their homes in Kosovo and for monitoring the repercussions of the conflict. Ashdown, who is shortly to give up his role as party leader, is regarded as being suitably qualified for this work. However, it is possible that other countries may oppose his appointment.
