UK: COMPETITION FROM ONLINE RETAILERS

Article Abstract:

The ability of Internet-based retailers to define their customer base effectively and develop sophisticated marketing systems is helping them to grow more quickly than high-street chains. A report commissioned by Oracle UK and Cisco Systems, called E-Business in a Connected World, claims that 80% of established retailers have failed to adopt an effective online strategy, despite 64% of senior executives recognising the importance of this area. According to the report, small well-managed start-ups have the opportunity to overtake large retailers, although other analysts predict that the new online companies will eventually be bought out by mainstream rivals.

UK: INTERNET SALES MAY NOT COME FOR CHRISTMAS

Article Abstract:

UK Internet retailers are warning customers that orders for certain items may not arrive in time for Christmas due to low stocks. Toys'R'Us has said that orders must be placed by 17 December 1999 for pre-Christmas delivery, and Jungle.com says that some items may not now arrive before Christmas. Bol.com and Amazon.co.uk, the Internet book retailers, have both reported huge increases in business, and have set deadlines of 20 December 1999 for definite pre-Christmas delivery. A survey from Dial Internet, meanwhile, has found that online purchasing may be more expensive than high street shopping, and may offer inferior customer service, although standards remain very variable.
