Retiring types

Article Abstract:

There are a number of possible approaches to financial planning for retirement. It is important to obtain an updated forecast of likely pensions, ensuring that any shortfall can be generated from investments. For people planning to retire at 60, rather than 65, it will also be necessary to consider how to bridge the gap until state pension is payable at 65. Attention must also be given to the inheritance tax implications of wills. Where a will is made entirely in the favour of a partner, there could be a tax liability on the death of the second partner.

Planning did not pay off

Article Abstract:

Providing a secure financial future can prove more difficult than it initially appears, especially if there are children involved. Paula Charlton, a graphic artist, pays a large monthly sum into various private pension plans, but was badly advised about which plan to select. This means that it will take 10 years before her pension arrangements begin to make a profit. She needs to ensure that she makes a will, especially as she is not married, and must also consider critical illness insurance.

Realising capital without being taxed

Article Abstract:

A Save As You Earn share option scheme operated by an employer can be a useful way of reducing a large mortgage for people who have no savings. However, it is important to consider how to reduce liability for capital gains tax when share options become available for use. In some cases, it would be advisable for a man to gift to his wife the maximum number of shares possible at the time the scheme is exercised, thus allowing the wife to use her capital gains exemption.
