Article Abstract:

It has become common for Western couples who wish to adopt a child to turn to eastern Europe. Adoptive parents have gone in particular to Hungary and Romania, where there are still many children in state-run orphanages. However, such adoptions can sometimes pose significant challenges. Indeed, two US couples have returned the children they adopted from Hungary. These two children have clearly been severely affected psychologically by their experiences, and are unlikely ever to feel truly secure anywhere.

Unease grows on Vienna memorial to the Holocaust

Article Abstract:

The construction on the Judenplatz (Jew's place) in Vienna, Austria, of a Holocaust memorial designed by Turner prize winner Rachel Whiteread is attracting considerable controversy. Some observers believe that the memorial, which represents the interior of a library turned inside out, as Jews are known as the 'people of the book,' is too large and that its meaning is too obscure. The memorial is the latest step in a shift in national consciousness about the part played by Austria in the Holocaust.

Warhol's soup cans go home to Slovakia

Article Abstract:

The Warhol Family Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce, Slovakia, close to the village where Andy Warhol's family had its origins, attracts mainly foreigners and art-lovers. Local people are proud of the area's connections with Andy Warhol, but mainly do not understand Pop Art. Exhibits at the museum include a record of Warhol's mother singing and speaking in the Ruthenian dialect and a number of original family photographs and documents.
