Rosemary Edmonds

Translator Rosemary Edmonds studied French at the Sorbonne. She joined General de Gaulle to help with translation in 1940, remaining in France throughout the second world war. She then studied Russian at the Sorbonne, and from the late 1940s began a career as a translator of Russian. She was one of a number of translators employed by Penguin Books to make foreign classics available to a wide audience. She gained a particularly strong reputation for her work on Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina.'

James Lees-Milne

Article Abstract:

Architectural historian and writer James Lees-Milne gained a degree in History from Magdalen College, Oxford, England. He became Secretary to the Country Houses Committee of the National Trust in 1936, and was responsible for the report that prompted the National Trust Act 1937, which allowed the giving of country houses to the National Trust free of death duties. He worked for the National Trust for 30 years, gaining a strong reputation as a novelist and biographer.

Rosa Beddington

Article Abstract:

Developmental biologist Rosa Beddington was born in Hurstbourne Tarrant, England, in 1956. She studied Medicine at Brasenose College, Oxford, England, and later moved into developmental embryology. She moved to the Centre for Genome Research in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1991.
