Rousing the rabble

Article Abstract:

A production of 'Coriolanus' at Chichester Festival Theatre, West Sussex in May 1992 stars Ken Branagh, Judi Dench and Richard Briers with fifty local volunteer amateurs playing the plebian chorus. Tim Supple directs the play with rehearsals twice a week for two months, then every evening for the last fortnight. Absence is not allowed, although many of the amateurs have already done a day's work. They include a headmaster, a nurse, schoolchildren and students who find rehearsals enjoyable and instructive. Terry King, the choreographer, appreciates their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work.

A night without stars on the Avenue

Article Abstract:

Female impresario Thelma Holt discovered director Matthew Warchus, 26, at the West Yokshire Playhouse, Leeds, England, and brought him to London to direct 'Much Ado About Nothing.' The production has no major stars or foreign exoticism, unlike most of her plays. Holt is Catholic, optimistic and fanatical about her work. She enjoys working with the talented people she employs. She put about 100,000 pounds sterling of her own money from the successful 'Three Sisters' into 'Much Ado.'

More, much more than this...

Article Abstract:

Humphrey Carpenter has composed two musicals, Babes and Mr Majeika, and is paying 16,000 pounds sterling out of his own pocket to bring them to London for four days. Babes is serious, about the exploitation of Judy Garland and other Hollywood child stars. Mr Majeika takes wacky views of education. The cast consists of 60 amateurs forming the Mushy Pea Theatre Company. Carpenter has earned a lot of money writing biographies and has been very successful with his Mr Majeika books.
