Russian treasure under wraps

Article Abstract:

The Moscow State Historical Museum, which was designed by Vladimir Sherwood in 1875, closed for restoration in 1986. The Orthodox Church is demanding the return of property which was requisitioned during the October Revolution. Many Russian antiques are going out of the country to private European and American collections. Security problems mean the collection would be safest left in the museum. Examples of jewellery and manuscripts are some of the best on public display.

Simplicity under Russian icing

Article Abstract:

Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (GUM) - State Universal Store- is a shopping centre in Red Square, Moscow, Russia, which has been redecorated for its 100th birthday. It is elegant and practical, with grandiose facades, Russian decoration and a light interior. Alexander Pomerantsev designed it in 1888. Three arcades form a covered mall 820 ft by 295 ft. Display inside the shops does not meet expectations and there is little for sale.

The enduring treasure of Pandora's box

Article Abstract:

There is now strong interest in collecting needlework cases and related ephemera, and these items have increased dramatically in value recently. It is still possible to purchase an empty Victorian needlework case relatively inexpensively, and then to fit it out over time with items such as thimbles and scissors. However, cases which still have all their original equipment have become very expensive, as have silver sewing items.
