Russians swear by leeches as a cure for modern ills

Article Abstract:

Leeches have been used by peasants in Russia as a traditional remedy for a number of illnesses and they are also recommended by some Russian physicians. Gennady Nikonov is a researcher specializing in leeches, and he is scientific director of Ruspharmacy which produces leeches for sale. The company is performing well. Ruspharmacy's workers are paid promptly at a time when many Russian workers are not being paid for months. There are dangers of infection from wild leeches, Nikonov argues. Consumers are also enthusiastic about leeches as a cure for a number of ailments.

The bodyguard, the chess master and model vie for a taste of power

Article Abstract:

The candidates in the forthcoming by-election in Tula, Russia, comes from unusual backgrounds. Yelena Mavrodi is a former model whose husband established the MMM pyramid investment scheme which caused great hardship for many ordinary Russians, while Alexander Korzhakov is the former chief bodyguard of Boris Yeltsin. Other candidates include Nikolai Novikov, a local wrestler who is in jail awaiting trial on racketeering charges, and Anatoly Karpov, the former world chess champion. Some candidates are believed to be standing merely to gain immunity from prosecution.

Article Abstract:

The residents of Oktyabrski, Russia, an isolated village on the western edge of the Kamchatka peninsula, face significant hardships. The whole region was closed to foreigners until 1990, as nuclear missiles were tested there. It has now been virtually abandoned by the central government in Moscow, Russia. Oktyabrski was once a thriving fishing community, but the canning factory has now closed down and many people have moved away. There is very little electricity, many buildings are in a very poor state of repair and food supplies are running low.
