Saudis attack rulers by tape and fax

Article Abstract:

Anonymous cassette tape recordings in Saudi Arabia demand less power for King Fahd, political change, and an independent foreign policy. After the Gulf War King Fahd received an open letter from 400 members of the Islamic movement which demanded freedom of speech, equality of ciizenship and freedom of the courts. Junior princes wanted the signatories killed, but the King refused. Faxes sent to King Fahd contain personal criticism and complain about politics. They demand accountability and participation of people outside the royal family.

Saudi Arabia is secretly supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to Nawaf Obaid, a Saudi who made this allegation in a thesis prepared for Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Obaid claims that US analysts have not been fully aware of the nature and aims of the Wahhabi movement in Saudi Arabia or of the influence of this movement over the secular leaders. He details cases where King Faisal was required to make concessions to Saudi Arabia's religious authorities.

Why we reject the West - by the Saudis' fiercest Arab critic

Article Abstract:

The presence of US forces in Saudi Arabia is an insult to the Saudi people, according to guerrilla leader Osama Bin Laden. He is fiercely opposed to the Saudi monarchy, and claims that all Muslims would prefer to live under sharia law. He believes that the US will face growing resistance in many Muslim countries, with the duty of true Muslims being to drive out US troops.
