Search for an assassin

Article Abstract:

South African white activist Richard Turner was shot dead at Christmas 1977, having been 'banned' by the South African government since 1973. He had been under great pressure from the security forces, but his murder was totally unexpected. The women in his life - his daughters and his first and second wives - are now returning to South Africa to try to uncover the truth about his murder. They are to testify before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and hope that the visit will help them to come to terms with what happened.

There's just enough muck in Ambridge

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the radio programme 'The Archers' is departing from its traditional roots in quiet rural life and is becoming too controversial, dealing with issues such as racial hatred, radical feminism and sexual passion. Others argue that the programme is simply showing rural life as it now is, indicating that even villages are not exempt from problems such as drug abuse and crime. The programme is attempting to portray ordinary daily life, but the scriptwriters include dramatic stories where necessary.

Singular girls

Article Abstract:

Women who are in their late 20s or early 30s and have a good career and financial security but remain unmarried have traditionally blamed this on unreliable men, but this argument is no longer feasible, according to US author Sheila Gillooly. Men may certainly exploit women who appear to fear commitment, but single women cannot always blame men. Indeed, many women focus on unavailable men because they cannot face having a genuine, serious relationship.
