Secret Saudi executions shame the West

Article Abstract:

Islamic trials held in the Arab Gulf states in recent years have led to at least 12 women being executed. The women were often denied proper legal assistance, and the killings were deliberately concealed from the west. Some observers are now beginning to claim that the unfair nature of the trials and the cruel methods of execution make it morally impossible for the west to continue giving military and political assistance to Saudi Arabia and other apparently civilised Gulf nations.

Reading between the lines of an uncertain future

Article Abstract:

It is vital to stand firm against Israel, according to Dr Nafez Shamas, a senior lecturer in applied linguistics at Damascus University and a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. He does not even believe in the existence of Israel. He does not feel that Syria will necessarily be plunged into chaos when president Hafez el-Assad dies, and does not expect a sectarian or religious war to break out. The tense situation with Israel will help to create unity within Syria.

Artistic celebrations defy the little Titos

Article Abstract:

Muslim leader of the Democratic Socialist Party Mr Ibrahim Spahic organised Sarajevo's winter 1992 arts festival. It has been an annual, cosmopolitan event since the 1983 winter olympics. Concerts, plays, art exhibitions and lectures have been courageously presented despite the war conditions. A cut in electricity prevented one production of 'Hair' from taking place.
