Shadow of war hangs over South Korea's border city

Article Abstract:

The discovery recently of a North Korean submarine in waters off the South Korean seaside town of Kangnung has had a dramatic impact on the town. The town was under curfew for more than a month while great efforts were made to track down the crew of the submarine, who had escaped into the countryside, and fishing boats were unable to leave harbour. The incident is estimated to have cost the town 110 million pounds sterling, particularly in lost tourist revenue.

N Korea looks to lost city for trade miracle

Article Abstract:

The North Korean government hopes that the development of the remote city of Rajin, which will act as the gateway to the Rajin-Sonbong Free Economic and Trade Zone (Fetz), will play a key role in boosting the country's economy. If this plan fails, then North Korea will face severe economic difficulties. Its economy has declined by 30% since 1991, and there have been particular problems with oil shortages and heavy floods.
