Crime and religious fanatics drive Pakistan to the brink

Article Abstract:

Public discontent in Pakistan about prime minister Benazir Bhutto and her government is growing as sectarian and ethnic violence mounts. The government seems to have completely lost control over the provinces, which are now the haunt of drug smugglers, feudal chieftains and drug smugglers, and religious fundamentalism is rising as the country's economic problems grow. However, the prime minister is likely to remain in power for the remaining three years of her government.

Fall from grace marks the last hurrah of the Bhutto dynasty

Article Abstract:

Pakistani president Farooq Leghari has dissolved the country's national and provincial assemblies, thus removing prime minister Benazir Bhutto from power. Leghari had for many years been a close friend of the Bhutto family. The move has generally been welcomed by most Pakistanis, particularly as Benazir Bhutto's husband, Asif Zardari, was widely disliked. Benazir Bhutto had gained growing international respect, but had come to be hated within her own country.
