She's making plans for Stanley

Article Abstract:

Working with Stanley Kubrick has been a very interesting experience, according to composer Jocelyn Pook, who found him very musically literate. She has supplied music for his film 'Eyes Wide Shut,' but has not yet seen any of this film. Kubrick was made aware of her work through the theme for the Orange Telecom television advertisement featuring a sample of Kathleen Ferrier singing 'Blow the Wind Southerly.' A version of this theme was included on Pook's debut album 'Deluge' in 1997.

The only way is up when you've hit rock bottom

Article Abstract:

Rock musician Robert Wyatt feels that the 1990s have not been a very good time for him. He took a long time to get over an accident in 1973 which left him paraplegic, and in the 1990s began to review his past, finding it very inaccessible. However, he has now been able to release 'Shleep,' his first album since 1991. This album is not always easy to listen to, but presents a hopeful world which cannot really be compared with contemporary music of any genre.

To bop or not to bop

Article Abstract:

European jazz is currently very strong, with particular talent being seen among British jazz artists. Indeed, Django Bates and Tony Coe, both from the UK, have been the only non-Americans to win the annual Danish Jazzpar Prize since it was set up in 1989. There are many influences on young British jazz musicians, although tradition can be both a burden and an inspiration. Leading musicians include saxophonist Julian Arguelles and pianist Nikki Yeoh.
