She's raw, she's rough, she's our new icon

Article Abstract:

The cult UK comic strip 'Tank Girl,' first launched in the late 1980s, features a woman who has no feminine characteristics. Like the women in latest Hollywood films, she enjoys power over men, but goes even further than this, taking on traits normally associated with men. She is now to appear in the film 'Tank Girl,' which opens soon. Her attitudes fit in well with a generation where girls are now outperforming boys educationally and have clear career ambitions.

What are women to make of Farrakhan?

Article Abstract:

The Million Man March organised recently by Louis Farrakhan focused on the crisis affecting black males, rather than the black race as a whole. This indicates that emancipation of race is no longer automatically associated with emancipation of gender. The black community in the US is experiencing a crisis which is grounded in masculinity, with black men being particularly badly affected by unemployment and often involved in crime.

Good news for gays ... well, nearly

Article Abstract:

The recent announcement by entertainer Michael Barrymore that he is gay was greeted quite positively. This is the most recent of a series of indications that UK society seems to be becoming more tolerant of gays. Attitudes have been softened by growing public awareness of Aids, and active prejudice is now much less common. However, gay activists are warning that it would be unwise to become complacent about anti-gay feelings.
