'Sinner' Estrada wins over hearts of Filipino poor

Article Abstract:

Philippines Vice-President Joseph Estrada, who claims to have been victorious in the country's presidential election, is certainly popular with ordinary people. He has actually gained supporters through his unconventional lifestyle, which includes womanizing and drinking heavily, as voters feel that he is not a hypocrite, unlike other presidential candidates. He has been able to appeal directly to ordinary people who are living in very difficult circumstances.

Sarah was one of millions of Filipino girls who dreamt of a brighter future overseas. Now she is fighting for her life

Article Abstract:

Sarah Balabagan was one of the many Filipinos who leave their country every day to work overseas in very menial jobs. She has now been sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates for stabbing her former employer. She claims that this was in self-defence, as he raped and assaulted her. Poor Filipino families are in a very difficult situation, as in many cases sending a family member to work abroad, often illegally, is their only way of obtaining any money.
