Sir Ian Percival

Article Abstract:

Barrister and politician Ian Percival studied at St Catherine's College, Cambridge, England. He fought in North Africa and Burma during the Second World War. He was first elected to the House of Commons, representing Southport, England, in 1959. He was made a Privy Counsellor in 1983, but never gained a ministerial appointment. After he left parliament in 1987, he pursued a range of other interests. These included raising funds for hospital treatment for the victims of the explosion at a chemical factory in Bhopal, India.

Viscount Whitelaw

Article Abstract:

Politician and farmer William Whitelaw gained a Third in Law and a Second in History at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He joined the Scots Guards, gaining a commission as a regular officer. He remained in the Army until 1947. He won the seat of Penrith and the Border for the Conservative party in 1955, retaining this seat until he became Leader of the House of Lords in 1983. He became a junior whip in 1961, and between 1962 and 1964 was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour.

Sir Gilbert Longden

Article Abstract:

Politician Gilbert Longden qualified as a solicitor in 1924. He worked for a time in India, and in 1940 became an officer in the Durham Light Infantry. He became Conservative MP for South West Herts in 1950, and gained a strong reputation as a Conservative writer and thinker. He was a supporter of closer links between the UK and Europe, and also gave his attention to the Commonwealth. He retired from the House of Commons in 1974.
