Six is too young for school tests

Article Abstract:

UK schools are now under a legal obligation to hold tests for six-year-olds. Some parents feel that this is far too young for a child to be taking formal tests, even if the school tries very hard to minimize the stress involved. Schools report that most children are not even aware that they are being tested, but some parents find this hard to believe. Testing children does not really measure their ability, and can be very negative if it gives them feelings of inadequacy. It would be better simply to have a teacher assessment of a six-year-old's abilities.

Where are all the teachers?

Article Abstract:

The number of people applying for teacher training courses in the UK continues to decline. There are particular problems with attracting people to study to teach mathematics, science and geography. This problem is partly a reflection of the strength of the UK economy, with many graduates only choosing teacher training at times of recession, when they cannot find other work. Experts believe that teacher recruitment is also being negatively affected by the poor reputation of teaching.

Uniforms: smart or silly?

Article Abstract:

Many UK schools are moving towards applying their regulations regarding uniform more strictly. This is even the case in primary schools, where approaches to uniform have traditionally been more relaxed. The vast majority of parents feel that school uniforms are indispensable, but some oppose moves to apply uniform regulations very strictly. They feel that an obsession with uniform could get in the way of a wider view on education.
