Sloppy procedures blamed for BSE-test fiasco

Article Abstract:

The UK Accreditation Service has claimed that the Institute for Animal Health in Edinburgh, Scotland, had no formal procedure for monitoring records connected with a vital experiment to ascertain whether BSE had infected sheep. This led to scientists spending four years working on cow brains when they believed they were testing sheep brains.

The UK Institute for Animal Health and the Dept for the Environment, Food and rural Affairs are both holding inquiries into how a team of top scientists investigating whether bovine spongiform encephalopathy had infected sheep at the end of the 1980s mistakenly studied cow brains instead of sheep brains.
