So how good a parent are you?

Article Abstract:

The UK government's National Family and Parenting Institute, the creation of which will be announced in Jul 1998, will be responsible for setting standards for classes in parenting, for overseeing health visitors and for running a telephone advice line for parents. It will gradually become the source of people's sense of what constitutes good parenting. It is possible to argue that this represents an infringement of individual freedom. However, it can also be argued that being a parent is one of the most socially important roles anyone can take on, and that therefore government should play some part in defining and encouraging good parenting.

A full wallet doesn't mean you have a soft head

Article Abstract:

The UK economy appears to be in a strong position at present, with low inflation and steady growth. Consideration must therefore be given to how to distribute the benefits of a strong economy. Some observers advocate paying off the national debt, while others call for higher public spending. It is important to remember that money alone will not necessarily help impoverished families to improve their situation. Efforts must be made to address violence and neglect, and attention must be given to breaking negative cycles and boosting virtuous ones.

Conservatism of the left - the siren voice that stifles change

Article Abstract:

There is a strong element of conservatism within the UK Labour party that resents any suggestion that changes should be made to the way in which the welfare state is run. They feel, for example, that no move should be made to re-assess people's eligibility for disability benefits, and some even go as far as to claim that only the disabled themselves should be allowed to decide whether they are in a position to work or not. Adopting this approach means that many people who could work are able to avoid doing so.
