Article Abstract:

Marje Proops has been the 'Daily Mirror''s agony aunt for 38 years since 1954, although she joined the paper in the 1940's as a fashion artist. Nine staff work on the page where advice on money, health, legal and other problems of the paper's eight million readers is dispensed. Marje was brought up as Rebecca Rayle in East London where her father ran a pub. She has one son. Her husband, who she met when she was 17, died in 1989. Marje, a feminist, works nine hours a day, five days a week, dealing with 5-600 letters which are registered and logged. Although she is in her late seventies she has no plans to retire.

Humble lives preserved from fire

Article Abstract:

Evelyn Friedlander collected Genizot, scraps of paper with the Hebrew name of God, in synagogues in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Jewish custom prevents such scraps being burnt. In the country synagogues could not be burnt down because of surrounding buildings. They are used as a community hall, warehouse or fire station. A picture of a poor Jewish community in the 18th and 19th centuries can be created. Fabrics were recycled and the people led a simple, religious life. Many Jewish women could read.

The reluctant hero

Article Abstract:

Albert French gained immediate recognition with his first novel, 'Billy,' and now hopes to repeat this success with 'Holly.' He came to writing relatively late in live, having previously almost died when a marine in Vietnam and worked for some time as a photographer and then a publisher. He is now drawing on his experience of racism for his writing.
