Some didn't last the night

Article Abstract:

General Montgomery attacked El Alamein on Oct 23, 1942. A service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey was held to mark the 50th anniversary of El Alamein. In 1942 every soldier received a 'Personal Message from the Army Commander.' At 10 pm 100,000 bayonets of the Eighth Army followed mine-lifting sappers and 1,600 guns fired. Many Australian and New Zealand soldiers were injured. Booby traps caused many of the injuries. Medical supplies were short and wards overflowed with patients.
