Some news just in ...

Article Abstract:

Christopher Morris plays the newscaster in Radio 4's successful comedy 'On the Hour' which is a spoof news programme using radio's resources to advantage. Its deviser and producer, Armando Iannucci, avoids topical issues and uses interviews with the general public. Christopher Morris began working in radio with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and Greater London Radio. Iannucci worked for BBC Radio Scotland and became a producer on 'The News Quiz' and 'Week Ending'. 'On the Hour' is created by storming sessions where the script is improvised from agreed briefs. Pre-edited tapes are cut and linked in the studio like news programmes.

Flashes of inspiration

Article Abstract:

Novelist Ian McEwan rejects the view that his talent lies in writing short stories, rather than novels. He does not feel that there are any problems with his novels. He feels that writing 'Amsterdam,' his new novella, was a form of relaxation after writing 'Enduring Love.' He now regards 'Enduring Love' and the three novels that preceded it as a quartet, characterized by their experimental form. He does not believe that his personal circumstances have affected his writing, but developments in his life can be seen in the lives of his characters.

The cavern club

Article Abstract:

BBC Radio 4 has broadcast 'Friday Lives,' about Norwegians, by Vaughan Purvis, a writer who lives in a cave for financial reasons, and his 'tales from northern latitudes' in a series of 10-minute broadcasts entitled 'Northings.' In the summer of 1992 he will travel to North Africa for a new series, 'Dust Devils,' to escape typecasting as a northern writer. Purvis was born in Devon in 1953; his mother left the family when he was five and he lived in Germany where his father taught music in forces schools.
