Some questions for Mr Fini

Article Abstract:

Italy's National Alliance has replaced the country's old neo-Fascist party, and has pledged to seek a liberal-democratic direction in Italian politics. It is led by Gianfranco Fini, who comes across as sophisticated, confident and intelligent. Observers welcome the possibility of the far right cooperating in the improvement of democratic institutions, but are already expressing doubts about whether this can really happen. There are already signs that some of the key features of the National Alliance are not at all in line with most people's concepts of democracy.

Questions and answers for a freedom of information act

Article Abstract:

There a number of key issues which should be taken into account by the UK Cabinet Subcommittee on Freedom of Information, which is looking to produce a White Paper by the end of 1997. Freedom of information legislation should give the widest possible access at the lowest possible cost, and exemptions should not go beyond a core of around 12 designed to protect important national interests. Considerable attention should be given to the question of how far the legislation should extend in terms of the levels of government which it affects.
