Sorry, Mr Prescott, but only coercion will drive our cars off the road

Article Abstract:

It is clear that the UK government needs to tackle the problems created by high levels of private car use. Some observers believe that this should not be done by penalizing motorists, but through gentle encouragement, with the bus and rail network first being extensively improved. However, it must be realized that many people are extremely attached to their car, and would not stop using it even if public transport were much more accessible. One solution may be to make it much more expensive to own a car, although this would have an unfairly harsh impact on the poor and those living in rural areas.

Prescott aims to end era of car

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's White Paper on transport places strong emphasis on reducing traffic congestion caused by private car use. It contains provisions to charge drivers for entering town centres, and also gives local authorities the right to impose a new parking tax on workplace parking. A Strategic Rail Authority will be set up to formulate a programme for developing the railways, and local councils will be encouraged to invest in improving bus services.

On the road to nowhere

Article Abstract:

The UK government's new transportation policy is placing strong emphasis on the use of technology to overcome traffic congestion. A role is foreseen for technology in the collection of road tolls, for example. However, there is still a long way to go before a reliable system of road tolls can be established. The technical solutions require high initial capital costs, and it would not be possible to abandon a system once it had been implemented.
