Sorry, comrades, the Serbs aren't nice old Communists

Article Abstract:

Many on the left in UK politics see the Serbs as admirable old Communists, and for this reason fail to condemn President Slobodan Milosevic. In fact, Milosevic's rise to power has been fuelled by an exploitation of fear of Muslims. He would not stop the destruction of the ethnic Albanian areas in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, if Nato were to call a halt to air strikes, and would pursue his policy of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. It is clear that there is a need to intervene to assist minorities such as the Albanians in Kosovo, but the left is deeply split on this issue.

Can we win from the air?

Article Abstract:

Nato has the capacity to undertake a lengthy air campaign against Serbia, but the pace of Nato's military action will ultimately be determined by political considerations. It will prove very challenging to balance military needs against a wide range of political imperatives, especially as all 19 Nato countries are involved in the campaign. It will be necessary to set up an armed international ground force to finally stabilize the region, and this force will have to be in place for a long time.
