Speaking in tongues

Article Abstract:

Polish actor Wojtek Pszoniak plays Mr Miller in 'The Deep Blue Sea' in London, England, although he did not understand English. He had some intensive language instruction and translated his script word by word, using a dictionary. A friend recorded the words without expression. Voice coach Joan Washington taught Pszonaik to use a positive tone and not to fade away at the end of sentences. Helen Blatch plays Greek servant Katina in 'The Gift of the Gorgon,' although she does not understand Greek. She used a BBC tape on 'How to Speak Greek.'

Music at the close

Article Abstract:

Guy Woolfenden, musical director of the RSC for 30 years in 1992, was appointed when he was 23 and has advised on 900 productions, worked on most Shakespeare plays twice or more and composed 150 scores. His policies include having musicians on view as part of the drama, and using actors who can sing or play themselves when that is required rather than using electronics or a musician in the wings. The set provides inspiration for incidental music, which can be altered for new productions.

Opening a book on it

Article Abstract:

Bookshops now have special sections for anthologies as there are so many of them, although the average reader does not read them. They are popular as presents, particularly in hardback. Some of them are simply collections but if the author is passionate about the theme they can be effective. They should be critical and creative, directing the reader on to other books. The assembled items have to be reduced to the required number and sorted into a satisfying order.
