Spurned matriarch of a media empire

Article Abstract:

The decision by Anna Murdoch to file for divorce from her media magnate husband Rupert Murdoch has been greeted with considerable surprise. It had been known that the couple were separating, but it was widely believed that Anna Murdoch had initiated this move simply to persuade her husband to devote more time to her. They have had a very strong partnership, and she is highly respected for her intelligence and determination. She has always been involved in his business life, and in 1990 took a seat on the board of News Corp.

Big Brother says switch off

Article Abstract:

The Telecommunications Liberalisation Bill passed recently by the US Congress aims to introduce competition between the cable, telephone and broadcasting sectors. However, it also contains elements which could herald government censorship in these areas. These include the introduction of the so-called V-Chip, which is installed in the television set and allows parents to control what children watch, and the Communications Decency Act, which bans the transmission over the Internet of material seen as indecent or offensive.

Where it's hip to speak Spanglish

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common in New York for people to combine English and Spanish to produce a variation on both languages which avoids the complicated verbs of Spanish but has its romance and rhythm. This combined language is now spoken by Hispanic television presenters and radio DJs, and is widely used in advertisements aimed at Hispanic communities. However, for some people, especially older Hispanics, it is an insult.
