Squalls face world's role model

Article Abstract:

There is very likely to be some kind of backlash against the Anglo-American economic model of capitalism, even though this system seems to be establishing a strong presence internationally. The Anglo-American model has been retained by successive administrations, mainly because it has been very successful in creating employment in the US. Some observers believe that this performance can be maintained, but others feel that retaining certain features of the Anglo-American model will depend on whether the US and UK economies continue to be regarded internationally as successful.

Back to basics for the market value pundits

Article Abstract:

The deal to support hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management will prompt observers to question why the US authorities allowed the financial system to become so fragile. It will also raise concerns about the way in which financial instability affects the real economy. It is likely that the connection between markets and the US economy will become a significant issue very rapidly. It is possible that a shift will take place into a period where investment managers return to basics, focusing on fundamental, long-term analysis of cyclical trends.

Will the hi-tech bubble burst?

Article Abstract:

The hi-tech industries account for less than 10% of the US economy, but they are producing three-quarters of its growth. This presents significant challenges for the Federal Reserve, which must decide whether to set interest rates to suit the hi-tech sector or the economy as a whole. Some observers believe that the hi-tech industries are in fact more vulnerable to an economic slow-down than the industries in which growth is much more modest. Slower hi-tech growth would have significant repercussions for the whole of the US economy.
