Stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap

Article Abstract:

CD producer Naxos, founded in the mid-1980s, initially aimed its products at consumers with only limited disposable income, according to founder Klaus Heymann. It has been criticised for exploiting eastern European musicians in order to produce CDs very cheaply. However, it is now recording more frequently in western Europe than in eastern Europe, and is aiming at serious collectors. Current projects include the less well-known 18th century symphonists and the first complete Beethoven and Vivaldi cycles.

The whole picture

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common for entire cycles of a composer's work to be performed or launched on CD. Some projects of this kind have genuine value, but many indicate that some performers, or record companies, are no longer capable of selecting just the best parts of a composer's work. It now seems to be widely believed that only an entire set will be acceptable, and only a few performers and conductors are brave enough just to select a few works.

The future has no frontiers

Article Abstract:

The 1996 Meltdown music festival in London, England, will bring together many different musical styles. The programme does not attempt to convey a deliberate 'message,' but simply aims to break down barriers between different kinds of music. The music featured in the programme would be suitable to perform at any venue, not just London. It includes Karelian vocal/instrumental group Varttina and the London Sinfonietta.
