Stark remined for fragile Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan must now learn a number of very important lessons from the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in the city of Kobe and the surrounding area. It is clear that the country's civil engineering is not as advanced as had been thought and that it has not succeeded in building structures which can withstand earthquakes. The government has invested very heavily in earthquake prediction research, but this has obviously been unsuccessful. Against this background, there would be enormous devastation if a large earthquake were to hit Tokyo, where population and traffic density is even greater than in Kobe.

A tale of two credit unions rocks Japan

Article Abstract:

A serious financial and political scandal is developing in Japan around the government-supported rescue in Dec 1994 of the Tokyo Kyowa and Anzen credit unions. These bankrupt concerns are now the subject of criminal investigations, and many claims have been made about their illegal conduct. The case has badly damaged the reputation of Yasushi Mieno, the former governor of the Bank of Japan, and forced the resignation of former cabinet minister Toshio Yamaguchi as deputy secretary-general of the New Frontier party.

Japan's own royals outshone by the pastel Princess

Article Abstract:

The Princess of Wales received a very warm welcome in Tokyo, Japan, from ordinary members of the public, even though she was only on a 'private' visis on behalf of the Red Cross. She has attracted considerable media attention, despite the scandals surrounding her private life since she last visited Japan. Crown Princess Masako attends many more official functions than the Princess of Wales, but seems to attract hardly any attention from the general public.
