Still haunted by the Stasi

Article Abstract:

The four million files of the Stasi of the former East German republic, hold information on a high proportion of the population who could be tried for crimes against humanity. The files will be opened soon with considerable repercussions on individuals, although it is likely that only high ranking officials will be tried. The outcome is awaited of a current trial against guards accused of shooting an escaper, to see what precedent is set. It is quite possible that the Berlin justice authority will want to prosecute former leader Erich Honecker who is hiding in Moscow.

Lech Walesa's place in history is secure. But he still has one ambition: to lead Poland to a final victory of Communism

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming presidential election in Poland will be a direct battle between current president Lech Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski, leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), the successor to the old Communist party. Opinion polls indicate that Walesa will win after a second round. This outcome would be a great achievement for a man who clearly has considerable personal strength but can at times seem out of place as president. He sees himself as just an ordinary man, but is determined to ensure that a Communist revival does not take place.

Making it a doddle for guests who toddle

Article Abstract:

There are now more than 80 tourist establishments in Austria which cater specifically for families with small children. They offer services such as baby equipment and children's meals, and older children can learn to ski. Most parents welcome the tolerant atmosphere at these establishments, having found holidays at places which do not cater specifically for children rather stressful.
