Still very French at heart

Article Abstract:

Around 250, 000 Acadians live in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. They are French-speakers, but live in harmony with English-speakers, in sharp contrast to the situation in Quebec. Acadians are descendants of the settlers from the Atlantic coast of France and from Brittany, who established trading operations in Nova Scotia. They now believe that their fate will depend on what happens in Quebec, and fear that they will cease to be recognised if federal funding for bilingualism is abolished.

London's lost peninsula

Article Abstract:

Property prices are rising rapidly in Rotherhithe, London, England, even though this part of the city, situated in the Docklands region, has very poor public transport links. The area is mainly attracting developers and purchasers because of the Jubilee Line extension to the London Underground system, which is set to open in 1998. Local residents feel that the area has been unsympathetically developed, with too great an emphasis on leisure facilities.

Sunburn and shocks

Article Abstract:

The new 300 million pounds sterling Port Aventura theme park at Vila Seca, Spain, is deliberately different in character from Disneyland Paris. The entrance charge is lower, and visitors are allowed to drink alcohol. It is divided into five different regions, and there is an imitation steam train running around the outside. There are many very good rides, but the standard of on-site catering is not very high.
