Strained relations with police hampered inquiries

Article Abstract:

Police investigations into claims of abuse at children's homes in Clwyd were not carried out effectively, according to a new report. The report concludes that it is now time to undertake a independent inquiry into how the police handled this matter. There is particular concern about indications of strained relations between police officers and social services staff. The police investigation failed to make use of the professional social work skills and expertise in child protection available in the area.

Cold light on the children's hell

Article Abstract:

A tribunal of inquiry has begun investigating the systematic abuse over many years of large numbers of children living in children's homes across North Wales. Complaints of abuse have been made to the police by 650 people who were living in children's homes in the region in a 25-year period from the mid-1970s. This will be the largest inquiry ever undertaken in the UK into the alleged abuse of children in care, with around 180 alleged victims set to give evidence.

3,000 in new abuse scandal

Article Abstract:

Police in the Merseyside region are undertaking an investigation into claimed cases of sexual and physical abuse at 15 children's homes in the region over the last 20 years. It is expected that the inquiry will last 12 months, and could include other children's homes. It follows revelations of extensive abuse at children's homes in Cheshire and North Wales, and has prompted some observers to claim that there was organised paedophile activity in the northwest.
