Strangely moving

Article Abstract:

American artist Alexander Calder produced a new kind of sculpture in the 30's comprising a dangling combination of wire and metal that moved in the normal draughts present in every room. The name 'mobiles' was given to these creations. Such contraptions had existed long before but Calder extended and developed them. Jean-Paul Sartre saw a link between Calder's work and his own philosophy, saying that mobiles are and that is all. He found their unpredictability particularly enthralling. Einstein also admired Calder's work tremendously, possibly because they resembled perpetual motion machines.

Johnny Rotten - punk, baboon and gargoyle

Article Abstract:

The members of punk group the Sex Pistols, particularly lead singer John Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten, were always very to shock ordinary people. Punk was later dismissed as a brief reflection of the dissatisfaction of the young, but is now starting to be seen more positively again. The Sex Pistols was responsible for the last truly widespread moral panic to hit the UK, and played a key role in liberating the young.

Making an honest woman

Article Abstract:

The National Gallery has acquired Holbein's 'Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling' for 12 million pounds sterling. It is a more typical example of his work, in which the reticent subject is minutely painted from life. This was unknown in England before Holbein. His work is so realistic it makes the observer feel as if the subject is actually there.
