Sudanese drift from the road to peace

Article Abstract:

The Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) peace talks in Abuja created an alliance between the two sections of the SPLA and they agreed to study a Nigerian power sharing scheme and reconvene. Over 22,500 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Kenya. Khartoum's military government has no southern stronghold and is influenced by the National Islamic Front. The war has bankrupt the country which has a debt of $15.5 billion, and only emergency aid is provided by the West because of Sudan's human rights transgressions.

Companies to which Goldenberg is supposed to have sent the goods cannot be traced.

Sudan starves as old allies wage war among themselves

Article Abstract:

Fighting in the Sudan tribal war between the Dinkas and the Nuers in the disputed territory between Kongor, Waat and Ayod in Upper Nile causes starvation. Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) Dinka leader John Garang stands for a united but secular Sudan, where the south has greater autonomy and southerners in the north would not be subject to Islamic law. SPLA United, the Nasir faction, led by Nuer Riak Machar, seeks complete independence from the north.
