Sudden death and the long quest for answers

Article Abstract:

The SAS killing of three unarmed IRA terrorists on Gibraltar in Mar 1988 continues to be a subject of considerable controversy. At the time, the killings were generally seen as justified, as intelligence indicated that the three were about to launch a bomb attack. However, it later emerged that they were carrying no weapons and no bomb at that time and that the killings were not investigated thoroughly. No photographs were taken before the bodies were removed, and statements were not taken from those involved until some time later.

Retrial for murder case 'battered wife.' (Sara Thornton sees Court of Appeal quash her conviction for murdering her husband)

Article Abstract:

Sara Thornton was suffering from 'battered wife syndrome' when she stabbed her violent and drunken husband, and should not have been convicted of murder, according to Court of Appeal judges. She has now been granted bail, having served six years of a life sentence, and a new trial has been scheduled to take place in Birmingham, England, in 1996. Her lawyers fear that a new trial may be prejudiced because the case has received a great deal of media coverage.

Semtex error could free 12 IRA men

Article Abstract:

The discovery in Mar 1996 of explosives traces on a vital piece of equipment at a UK forensic science laboratory could mean that at least 12 IRA prisoners were convicted on unreliable evidence. The government has emphasised that it is very unlikely that any miscarriages of justice took place, but Sinn Fein has now advised all republicans imprisoned in the UK to challenge their convictions. Police fear that guilty men may now be set free.
