Mr Hague is risking more than his job at this election

Article Abstract:

Now Hague must win the left and rebuild the party

Article Abstract:

New UK Conservative party leader William Hague may prove to be the right person to unify the party and modernize its outdated structures. It is clear that reorganization at local level will be a key element in rebuilding support for the party, as shown by the experiences of the Labour party. The party will have to give more real power to ordinary members, but at the same time will have to act to limit the autonomy of its local associations. It will also be necessary to undertake a policy review if the party is to regain the centre ground of UK politics.

Suddenly, Mr Hague has a chance to outflank the Prime Minister

Article Abstract:

It is clear that there is considerable support within the parliamentary Conservative party for a democratically elected second chamber in the UK. This indicates that party leader William Hague would be in a strong position if he decided to out-manoeuvre Prime Minister Tony Blair on the issue of House of Lords reform. Hague should be able to reverse his apparent acceptance of the government's very limited plans for House of Lords reform as long as the Commission he established under former Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay reports before the Committee stage in the House of Lords starts just after Easter 1999.
