Sunk under the weight of culture

Article Abstract:

The Biennale is an arts event held for five days in June every second year in Venice, Italy. The 45th Venice Biennale was organised by Achille Bonito Oliva. Organisers suggested that every country gave some of the exhibiting space in its pavilion in the Giardini to a less privileged country. This festival is traditionally considered to show falling standards, but it is not representative of contemporary art. The most notable contributions in 1993 are those of Ilya Kabakov from Russia and Hans Haacke from Germany.

The virgin rebirth

Article Abstract:

The National Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of paintings by 16th century German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder. He became most well known for his depictions of nude women, and his 1509 work 'Venus Restraining Cupid' is widely regarded as the first German painting showing a fully nude classical goddess. He was not particularly pioneering in his approach to his subjects, but became the main specialist painter of mythologically inspired women in northern Europe.

Club Med

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Grand Tour: the Lure of Italy in the Eighteenth Century.' This looks through various works of art at the morals, customs and interests of young aristocrats who undertook extensive cultural tours of Italy in the 18th century. The most attractive exhibits include a Fragonard red-chalk-and-pencil drawing of the Temple of the Sibyl in Trivoli and a watercolour by John Robert Cozens of the Colosseum.
