Article Abstract:

A number of prominent business leaders and politicians in Russia are regrouping and strengthening themselves as the country's political and economic crisis worsens. These prominent figures include Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow, Russia, who exerts very tight control over the city. Business leaders are determined to ensure a business environment that will be beneficial to their interests, a development which is prompting growing concern among international observers.

Primakov to end Russia's stalemate

Article Abstract:

New Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, whose appointment will be confirmed by the Duma on Sep 11, 1998, will have more power than his predecessors. This is because the Duma has shown that it can stand firm against President Boris Yeltsin on key issues. The main political factions have expressed support for Primakov, who has avoided aligning himself closely with any faction. He has shown loyalty to Yeltsin, and has a reputation for being retiring.

Fear and loathing in the most important poll of all

Article Abstract:

The campaigning for the forthcoming presidential election in Russia has been marred by a number of violent incidents, including a bomb in a metro train which killed four people. It appears that certain elements within Russian society are intent on creating an unstable situation and planting fear in the minds of ordinary people. The tone of political debate has been strained, reflecting the overall atmosphere of tension.
