Superspan faces his toughest test

Article Abstract:

US Federal Reserve Chmn Alan Greenspan could face significant challenges to his reputation in the near future. It is now becoming widely recognized that the imbalances in the US economy cannot continue, and Greenspan will address difficult issues as he seeks to bring about a soft landing. A hard landing for the US economy would have a negative impact on the rest of the world, especially recovering emerging market nations in Asia.

The court case between the Unilever Pension Fund and Mercury Asset Management, now known as Merrill Lynch Investment Management, is discussed. Unilever is alleging negligence in the management of a key element of its corporate pension fund. If the Unilever trustees are successful, this could bring about significant changes in pension fund management.
