Supreme dramatist of the face

Article Abstract:

The National Gallery in London, England, is staging an exhibition entitled 'Rembrandt by Himself.' This exhibition covers 30 paintings, a large number of etchings and a few drawings. There are some works that are possibly not by Rembrandt, as well as some possibly not of him. His early self-portraits are confident, while the later ones have a strong element of self-scrutiny, with signs of anxiety and insecurity. The success of the late self-portraits lies in the way in which they show Rembrandt both as a sinner and as pardoned.

All at face value and nothing left to the imagination

Article Abstract:

The Saatchi Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the work of painter Alex Katz. His very large paintings sometimes show single figures and sometimes groups, and portray incidents from everyday life. It is possible to be critical of certain aspects of his work, as the drawing lacks life and the transitions from light to shade are too jumpy. The painting tends to be rather flat and inexpressive.

Not to be taken at face value
