It is now possible to travel to ski resorts in California relatively quickly and inexpensively. There is usually plenty of winter accommodation around Lake Tahoe, and bargain prices can be obtained from tour operators such as Virgin Ski. None of the ski areas are large by European standards, but there is a wide range of runs. One of the most attractive resorts is Squaw Valley, which is ideal for experienced skiers and for beginners.

The region of the Alps where Switzerland, Austria and Italy meet can be a very interesting place to ski, as there are clear contrasts between the resorts in the different countries. It is considerably more expensive to eat in Austria than in Italy for example, and eating in Switzerland can be 100% more expensive than eating in Italy. The Austrian and Italian resorts tend to be more fashionable, but prices are lowest in Italy.

Skiers who want to use more than one resort when on a ski holiday find that it is very expensive to pay by the day. However, in some areas of the Alps resort managers are now cooperating to offer lift passes which cover multiple resorts, thus considerably cutting costs for skiers. The most attractive of these is the Superski Domomiti pass, which covers a considerable number of Italian lift companies.
