Sushi and saki set to give way to a new generation

Article Abstract:

Yaohan UK, which operates the Yaohan Plaza Japanese shopping centre in north London, England, has experienced difficulties since Yaohan Japan, its Japanese affiliate, collapsed in Sep 1997. It is now negotiating a sell-out to Malaysian retailing concern Feroamaz. Problems at Yaohan reflect changes which are taking place within the Japanese community as a whole in London, England. This community now contains many researchers, teachers and students, who cannot afford the high prices charged by stores at the shopping centre. It also has a high proportion of single company employees, rather than families.

Collapse of buying group adds to pressure for Co-op merger

Article Abstract:

The cost of buying food supplies is about to rise sharply for many individual UK Co-operative retailers following the collapse of the Consortium of Independent Co-Operatives, a joint buying agreement. This development has also increased the chances of a merger between the Co-operative Wholesale Society - which leads a rival buying group - and the Co-Operative Retail Society, which was one of the largest businesses in the CIC. The merger had been opposed by the former chief executive at CRS, Harry Moore, but his departure removes another merger obstacle.
