Talking peace where once there was silence

Article Abstract:

Recent controversy surrounding the decision by the Queen's University of Belfast's decision to no longer play the national anthem at graduation ceremonies for the Royal Ulster Constabulary shows that there is still a long way to go before the Unionist and nationalist communities can live harmoniously together. The framework document currently being negotiated by the British and Irish governments allows for Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK as long as this is the wish of the majority there, but for Unionist and nationalist traditions to both be respected. This is likely to be a very slow process.

Echoes after the guns fall silent

Article Abstract:

The recent death of Jim Seymour, who was shot in the head in 1973 while serving as an RUC constable and remained in a coma for 22 years, has highlighted the need to ensure that violent conflict never returns to Northern Ireland. He is one of many who have been permanently wounded during the years of conflict, and in many cases these people have simply been innocent victims. Many families in Northern Ireland have experienced death at first hand, and are determined that this should never happen again.
