Thanks for the memories

Article Abstract:

Many recent reports and surveys have given the impression that childhood in the 1990s is dominated by depression, dissolution and poor discipline. Young people today seem unable to enjoy the happy, carefree childhoods which were experienced by their parents, and face many pressures. Poverty and unemployment are certainly having an unsettling influence on children's lives, but even children from wealthy backgrounds can be unhappy. It is now vital to assess what must be done to help families improve their children's lives.

Why Alice doesn't live here any more

Article Abstract:

Alice Harter, 16, is on remand in Trinidad, charged with attempting to smuggle cocaine. She comes from a middle-class, caring family but rebelled, left home and lived in the Alone In London hostel for the homeless. It has a confidentiality policy which meant her mother was not informed of any suspicions about drug dealers. Alice had visited home but seemed emotionally distressed. Alice's behaviour change began after her father died from cancer when she was 13.
