Thatcher flays Tory wounds

Article Abstract:

Baroness Thatcher criticised the Treaty on European Union and demanded a referendum in an article in the European and in an interview for the Spanish newspaper ABC. Prime Minister John Major said many issues raised at the Conservative Party conference were dealt with in the treaty. Chancellor Norman Lamont said that the treaty did not force Britain into a single currency. Sir Edward Heath, interviewed on Channel 4 News, considered that Lady Thatcher's points were invalid.

Blair targets Tory funds

Article Abstract:

The funding of the UK Conservative party will be investigated by the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life if the Labour party wins the next general election. There is great secrecy surrounding the sources of the Conservative party's funding, to the extent that this information is not even revealed to the party's Board of Finance. The Nolan Committee is currently investigating local government, but will be looking for new areas to investigate from spring 1997.

How 'Government Sources' massaged the message

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party's spin doctors have been working hard to ensure positive media coverage of the party and its leading personalities as it holds its 1997 annual conference. Their efforts have included releasing briefs giving some details of Prime Minister Tony Blair's speech to the conference. They have also sought to influence the mood within the party itself in advance of votes on key issues such as university tuition fees.
