The Bruce Lee of drama

Article Abstract:

The English-language theatre is beginning to become fully aware of the works of French dramatist Bernard-Marie Koltes, who died in 1989. His last play, 'Roberto Zucco,' is currently part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's programme in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, and his play 'In the Solitude of the Cotton Fields' is to open at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland, shortly. This play will also be performed in a BBC radio production in Mar 1999. His work makes frequent changes of setting and style, reflecting his own restless travelling.

And his bird can sing

Article Abstract:

Composer Simon Holt found himself being greatly inspired by the work of Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca. He experiences very strong urges to set Lorca's poems to music. His new opera 'The Nightingale's to Blame,' based on Lorca's 'erotic strip cartoon' 'The Love of Don Perlimpin for Belisa in the Garden,' will receive its world premiere at the Huddersfield Festival in a performance by Opera North on Nov 21, 1998. He feels that Lorca's writing has great musicality.

In the blood-line

Article Abstract:

Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was murdered by the Fascist Black Squad in Aug 1936, wrote plays which contain many typically Andalusian elements. This means that they are often very hard to translate into English, and their rhythm is also at odds with the English language. However, a number of successful English-language productions of his plays have been made. Most recently, his play 'Blood Wedding' is being staged by both the Young Vic and the Northern Stage Company.
