The Chinese solution

Article Abstract:

Russian industrialist Arkady Volsky gave a speech in Moscow praising China's economic reforms. Russia's move into the free market has led it into crisis. Chinese industrial production is expected to increase by 20% in 1992, whereas Russia's will fall by 20%. Russian state-owned firms created 90% of output in 1991, compared to 50% in China. The mixed Chinese economic formula has not reduced living standards, but there are 800 million peasants compared to 38 million in Russia, of whom 3/4 live in cities.

Gorbachev-Yeltsin feud comes full circle

Article Abstract:

Former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev rejects widely held beliefs that he now belongs to the country's political past, and is instead predicting that his time is yet to come. Over recent years, he has had all his privileges removed as president Boris Yeltsin tried to prove to him who was really in power. However, some privileges are now starting to be returned, apparently in an effort to stop him expressing open opposition to the present administration.

Saved from death only to go mad

Article Abstract:

The residents of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya which has been destroyed by fighting between Chechen and Russian troops, are living in appalling conditions. Doctors believe that, along with ordinary medical problems, many are suffering from post-traumatic stress. Some behave as if the conflict had not happened, and there is an urgent need to bring in psychiatrists to help them.
